Tunnel of Oppression tour to visit CCU

November 4, 2011

Coastal Carolina University will host the second annual Tunnel of Oppression on Wednesday, Nov. 9, and Thursday, Nov. 10, from 5 to 9 p.m. at University Place. The event is free and open to the public.

Tunnel of Oppression is a multimedia tour designed to challenge conventional ideas and perceptions about issues dealing with oppression. The Tunnel began at Western Illinois University as a grassroots diversity program.

Participants will explore a series of different rooms featuring various multimedia video, images, interactive skits and role-playing designed to raise awareness of acts of oppression, such as rhuman trafficking, elder abuse, LGBTQ, and homelessness/poverty that occur around the world. Participants begin by taking a tour of the Tunnel in small groups, and then each group will have an opportunity to process their experience. After the tour, participants receive information on how to address issues of oppression.

The event will take place at University Place III Activity House, 1095 Residence Blvd., off S.C. 544.

This event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Services, University Housing, Counseling Services, the Honors Program, Women’s Resource Center, Accessibility and Disability Service, Wheelwright Auditorium and Volunteer Services.
