Award-winning bards host poetry reading at CCU

Two award-winning poets, Natasha Trethewey and Jake Adam York, will give a joint reading of their most recent works when they visit Coastal Carolina University on Thursday, March 29, at 4 p.m. The reading will take place in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts and is free to attend.

Trethewey is the author of three collections of poetry: “Domestic Work,” “Bellocq’s Ophelia” and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry winner, “Native Guard.” She was awarded the 2008 Mississippi Governor’s Award for Excellence in Arts from her home state, named the 2008 Georgia Woman of the Year and later became a member of the 2011 class of inductees into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame. Her poems have appeared in literary journals such as the Gettysburg Review, The Southern Review and the Kenyon Review.

York is also the author of three books of poetry: “Persons Unknown,” which contains the 2010 Third Coast Poetry Prize winning poem “Before Knowing Remembers,” “A Murmuration of Starlings,” which simultaneously earned him the 2008 Crab Orchard Prize in Poetry and the 2008 Colorado Book Award for Poetry and the 2005 Elixir Prize in Poetry winner, “Murder Ballads.” He has also published poems in various poetry journals, including The New Orleans Review, The Oxford Review and Poetry Daily.

The reading is part of the 2012 Celebration of Inquiry and the Nancy K. Smith Distinguished Visitors Series.
