Atlantic Stage offers summer shows
“Oodles” by Jayce T. Tromsness, co-founder and artistic director of Distracted Globe Theater Company in Greenville, is a tale about a cursed princess to whom all food tastes disgusting. Her kitchen staff travels to many faraway places, encountering various obstacles, in their quest to gather ingredients for a dish to remove the curse.
Performances take place at the Atlantic Stage theater in CCU’s Myrtle Beach Education Center, at 79th Avenue in Myrtle Beach, through June 29 at 6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. Beginning Wednesday, June 13, additional shows will take place in the Cooper House, at 6011 Dick Pond Road in Socastee. Shows will be performed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. The play is appropriate for children of all ages; admission is $10.
“The Complete History of America,” co-authored by Adam Long, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor, is billed as “600 years of history in 6,000 seconds.” Originally performed by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, the script has been updated to include new material concerning recent U.S. presidential contenders. Company member Marc McIntyre and Atlantic Stage artistic director Thom Penn will reprise their roles from an earlier production. Shows begin on Tuesday, July 17 at 7:30 p.m. and run Tuesday through Friday, with the final show on Friday, Aug. 3. Due to the subject matter, children 12 and up are admitted. Tickets range from $17.50 to $27.50.
The Atlantic Stage is the only nonprofit, professional theater in Myrtle Beach. An agreement with CCU allows the company usage of the theatrical facilities at the Myrtle Beach Education Center. The company was formed in 2008 by a group of theatre artists working at Coastal Carolina University and regionally.
Atlantic Stage company member Kris Rau McIntyre directs both productions.
