HCHEC awards scholarships to 24 local students

The Horry County Higher Education Commission (HCHEC) recently awarded its annual scholarships to 24 area high school seniors who are enrolled at Coastal Carolina University for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Scholarships are awarded in three categories: Leadership; Visual and Performing Arts; and Academic Excellence. The Leadership Scholarship and the Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship each provide $2,500 per academic year for up to four years at CCU to qualified Horry County students. The Academic Excellence Scholarship provides $2,000 per academic year for up to four years at CCU.

HCHEC Leadership Scholarships were awarded to:

Nicole Dunavant, an intended exercise science major from Myrtle Beach High School

Jesse Uzzel, an intended resort tourism major from Loris High School

Hathaikane Bouphasavanh, an undeclared major from Carolina Forest High School

Samantha Deberry, an intended communications major from Conway High School

Kaydee Culclasure, an intended graphic design major from Socastee High School

Ellis Spearman, an intended applied mathematics major from Conway High School

Makayla Todd, an undeclared major from Loris High School

Katherine Parris, an intended art major from Socastee High School

Douglas Wentz, an intended music major from St. James High School

Tyler Davidson, an intended marketing major from Socastee High School

HCHEC Visual and Performing Arts Scholarships were awarded to:

Kristen McGuire, an intended art major from Socastee High School

Rebecca Jolly, an intended art major from Carolina Forest High School

Hunter Lowes, an intended music major from Conway High School

Dakota Dean, an intended dramatic arts major from St. James High School

Carson Hamilton, an undeclared major from Myrtle Beach High School

HCHEC Academic Excellence Scholarships were awarded to:

Brett Cooksey, an intended sociology major from Aynor High School

Kevin McCarey, an intended applied mathematics major from Carolina Forest High School

Danielle Ludlam, an intended exercise science major from Conway High School

Calleen Hammond, an intended applied mathematics major from Green Sea-Floyds High School

Mariel Po, an intended health promotions major from Loris High School

Nicole Dunavant, an intended exercise science major from Myrtle Beach High School

Gabriel Pruitt, an intended psychology major from North Myrtle Beach High School

Delanie Sage, an intended marine science major from Socastee High School

Gregg Jognsen, an intended biology major from St. James High School

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Leadership Scholarships are designed to promote service and citizenship and to recognize students for their leadership, volunteerism and academic excellence. To qualify, students must submit an application, have earned a minimum 2.5 high school grade point average through their junior year and have an established record of exemplary community service.

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Visual and Performing Arts Scholarships are designed to assist exceptionally talented Horry County seniors who plan to major in music, musical theatre, theatre arts, art studio, dramatic arts or graphic design. This scholarship also requires students to submit an application, a minimum 2.5 high school grade point average and an audition or portfolio review.

The Horry County Higher Education Commission Academic Excellence Scholarship honors the top graduate of each eligible Horry County high school for his/her outstanding academic accomplishments. The top-ranked graduate from each eligible Horry County high school admitted to Coastal Carolina University by Jan. 1 will be awarded this scholarship.
