Atlantic Stage offers seasonal play with Truman Capote’s 'Holiday Memories'

November 28, 2012

Atlantic Stage presents "Holiday Memories," stories by Truman Capote of his childhood holidays in southern Alabama in the early 1930s, featuring "The Thanksgiving Visitor" and "A Christmas Memory." The play will run weekly from Thursday to Sunday from Dec. 6 to Dec. 23.

The lighthearted family stories are adapted for the stage by playwright Russell Vandenbroucke. They embrace the love and friendship between young Buddy and his older cousin and best friend, Miss Sook, as narrated by Truman, the older version of Buddy. In "The Thanksgiving Visitor," Buddy has to confront the local bully who was invited to dinner by Miss Sook. In "A Christmas Memory," fruitcakes are being made, and Christmas trees are decorated. The traditions of the holiday are relived, and memories of Miss Sook are lovingly recalled by Truman who now sees the beauty and wonder in the world that she saw.

These heartwarming stories about family and friends are brought to life by Sandra Shackelford, Equity actor and company member, as Miss Sook Falk; Justin Ables as Buddy; and Thom Penn, Equity actor and company member, as Truman, under the direction of company member Mindi Blackburn Penn.

Other cast members include Jedediah Keck, Shannon Cherney, Kennedy Hayes, Allie Minarik and Torian Brewer.

Atlantic Stage is the only nonprofit professional theatre in Myrtle Beach. Its home venue, the 79th Avenue Theatre at U.S. 17 Bypass and 79th Avenue North at CCU's Myrtle Beach Education Center, will also be a collection site for donations to North Strand Helping Hand food pantry throughout the production.
