Eliza Glaze has been named the second Clark Chair in History at Coastal Carolina University effective August 2013. The Clark Chair was established in 2010 as the result of a gift from the late Lawrence and Jane Clark. CCU history professor Roy Talbert Jr. was the first recipient of the chair.

Glaze holds a Ph.D. from Duke University. She teaches courses in the history of early European medicine, medieval European and Byzantine history, and the history of medieval Christian-Muslim-Byzantine interactions during the crusades of the 11th through 15th centuries. She has previously served as co-director of CCU's honors program and completes her term as chair of CCU's Department of History in summer 2013.

The Clark Chair in History is expected to actively pursue a scholarly agenda that results in the publication of a book or multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals. The chair should also make significant progress toward giving scholarly presentations at professional conferences, delivering a public lecture based on the chair's research projects, bringing guest speakers to campus and continuing to serve as an active member of the Department of History. The term of the Clark Chair is three years.

Glaze plans to complete two book projects, "Medicine, Sister of Philosophy: The Triumph of Rational Medicine in the Latin West c. 500-1200" and "Gariopontus and the Salernitans: The 'Passionarius' and Medical Practice in Southern Italy," which will present the critical edition of an important 11th-century Latin medical text that survived in more than 75 variant manuscripts across Europe. This will complete a major project Glaze initiated in 2007.

In addition to these two books, Glaze plans three journal articles and an ambitious schedule for hosting speakers and symposia at Coastal.
