Step Afrika! steps into Wheelwright for free show

March 8, 2013

Step Afrika!, a Washington D.C. based professional stepping company, stomps its way to Coastal Carolina University's Wheelwright Auditorium during its annual 50-city college tour on March 19, at 7 p.m. The show is free and open to the public, and a ticket is required.

Step Afrika! is celebrated worldwide for its efforts to promote an appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition's use as an educational tool for young people. Step Afrika! has performed on stages in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.

Stepping grew from traditional African folk dancing and was popularized in the 1900s by black fraternities and sororities. The dance involves using the using the body as an instrument to create complex rhythms and sounds. This is achieved through footsteps, handclaps and shouts of spoken word.
