'Chorus Line' to play at 79th Avenue Atlantic Stage

October 28, 2013

"A Chorus Line," the sixth-longest running Broadway play ever, will be staged by Coastal Carolina University's Department of Theatre, opening Thursday, Oct. 31, and running through Saturday, Nov 16.

Seventeen Broadway dancers audition for coveted spots on a chorus line in this musical set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre. "A Chorus Line" profiles the dancers and choreographers, their life events and decisions that have led them to this moment -- waiting for the next break. Winner of nine Tony Awards and the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for drama, this musical deconstructs the anonymous ensemble to reveal the individual struggles, hopes and passions of 17 performers fighting for one thing -- a chance to dance. The full schedule is as follows: Oct. 31, through Saturday, Nov. 2; Wednesday, Nov. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 9; and Wednesday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 16. All dates have a 7:30 p.m. start time, including two shows on Saturday, Nov. 9 and 16 at 3 and 7:30 p.m.

A cadre of CCU theatre majors comprises the cast including: Michael Lawrence as director Zach, and Drew Hardy as his assistant Larry; Anna Saunders as Zach's former lover Cassie Ferguson; Anna Sheridan as the sassy and aging dancer Sheila Bryant; and Shelby Dangerfield as the potty-mouthed, yet talented dancer Val Clark. Theatre majors fill the more than 20 other roles as well.

John Woodson, an assistant professor of theatre, will direct. Michael Gribbin, associate professor of theatre, is the musical director. Adam Pelty, an assistant professor of theatre, is providing choreography.

General admission tickets are $15. Teens, CCU/HGTC faculty/staff, alumni, OLLI members and senior citizens are $10. CCU/HGTC students are $5. Seating is limited and reserved.

Atlantic Stage's 79th Avenue Theatre is located at 900 79th Ave. N. in Myrtle Beach, in CCU's Myrtle Beach Education Center on the corner of 79th Avenue North and U.S. 17 Bypass.
