CCU offers ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ lectures
"Driving Miss Daisy," by Alfred Urhy, is a moving and humorous study of the unlikely relationship between an elderly white Southern woman and a proud, soft-spoken black man who is her chauffeur. The Atlantic Stage production is directed by Gwendolyn Schwinke, assistant professor of acting and voice in CCU's Department of Theatre. It features retired CCU theatre professor Sandi Shackelford in the title role, as well as Al Mathias and CCU alumnus Jason Adams. The show opened Jan. 10 and runs Thursdays to Sundays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. until Feb 2.
Following performances on Saturday, Jan. 18, and Sunday, Jan.19, Morehouse will discuss "The Modern South." The talk will specifically address changes during the civil rights era, as well as norms and laws that changed for African Americans in the era.
On Sunday, Jan. 26, Prince will speak on "Driving Miss Daisy: A Historical Perspective" following the 3 p.m. matinee. Both lectures will be held at Atlantic Stage in the Myrtle Beach Education Center at 79th Avenue North and U.S. 17 Bypass.
Morehouse graduated from the University of California Berkeley with a Ph.D. in African Diaspora Studies and currently teaches Southern history at CCU. She works with media crafting oral histories into visual short stories on topics ranging from black World War II soldiers, to enslaved potters, to Southern women, to African Diaspora migration.
Prince, professor of American history at CCU, has served on the faculty since 1987. Prince also directs the Waccamaw Center for Cultural and Historical Studies at Coastal. His research interest is Southern economic history. He is the author of "Long Green: The Rise and Fall of Tobacco in South Carolina" and "The Golden Harvest: Remembering Tobacco in the Pee Dee." Prince was also an associate editor of the "South Carolina Encyclopedia."
