CCU adds Teaching Fellows program

May 12, 2014

Coastal Carolina University is establishing a Teaching Fellows Program in its Spadoni College of Education starting in fall 2015, and is only the 11th South Carolina Teaching Fellows institution in the state to offer the program.

Fueled by the S.C. General Assembly, the program seeks to encourage talented high school seniors to consider the teaching profession. Administered by the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA), the Teaching Fellows program provides a $24,000 scholarship/loan for a select number of outstanding high school seniors annually. Scholarships pay for their college education based on the promise that they will serve one yearin a state public school for each year they receive the scholarship. The total amount can be up to $24,000 over the course of four years of study, followed by four years teaching in a public classroom.

"Our Teaching Fellows Program will provide advanced enrichment opportunities, professional development and relevant involvement with communities and businesses that will prepare educators who understand and can affect the achievement/opportunity gap," said Edward Jadallah, dean of Spadoni College. "The proposed program places an emphasis on the college's commitment to work with regional school districts to address the achievement/opportunity gap.

"Through participation in the Teaching Fellows Program, our college will further develop new experiences coordinated within existing school/university partnerships, CCU's Biddle Center for Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement, and other community/business partnerships. In addition to a teacher education curriculum that provides candidates with a scope and sequence of meaningful field-based experiences, our Teaching Fellows program will feature experiential learning opportunities beyond our established programs," said Jadallah.

Applications for the South Carolina Teaching Fellows program will be available online to high school seniors in early September. After a review of applications and student interviews, CERRA selects the scholarship recipients and attempts to match them with their first-choice institution.
