CCU to welcome new students with activities

August 7, 2014

Coastal Carolina University will welcome more than 2,400 freshmen and 740 transfer students with a series of welcome week activities from Friday, Aug. 15, through Monday, Aug. 18.

Welcome week is officially known as CINO (Coastal Is Number One) TIE (Tradition, Integrity, Excellence). The events begin with Move-In Day on Friday, Aug. 15, at 8 a.m. when freshmen will move into their residence halls with the help of "Chanticrew," a group of 545 faculty, staff and student volunteers.

Move-in day continues on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. with other events held throughout the day such as a Coastal Beach Bash, a Mountain Bike Ride, Sunset Yoga, a "Dive-In Movie" and more.

On Sunday, students will attend the New Student Convocation in the HTC Center at 11 a.m. CCU senior English major Sommersill Tarabek will deliver the convocation address. During her time at CCU, Tarabek has been on the President's List consistently, been published in CCU student publications Tempo and Archarios, and has been a member of the Honors Program since beginning at CCU in 2011. Other events on Sunday will include the "Big Read Discussion," a math placement test and cookouts. This year's big read is John Carlin's "Playing The Enemy, Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation."

During the weekend, a recurring interactive theatrical performance session called "How 'Bout This Party?" will be held for each residential community on campus. The performance will address such topics as alcohol, sex, assault, bystander intervention, victim blaming and support. The last two performances will be held Monday, Aug. 18.
