CCU Faculty Ensemble to perform jazz concert

September 24, 2014

Coastal Carolina University's talented music faculty will recreate the Miles Davis' classic "Birth of the Cool" album of 1957 in a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission is $5.

Performing are Mark Chesanow, Chris Connolly, Bill Hamilton, Dan O'Reilly, Tonya Propst, Matt White and Jesse Willis. They will be joined by CCU alumnus Simon Harding and student Stephen Healy.

"Birth of the Cool" is a compilation album by Davis featuring several notable musicians and released on Capitol Records. Davis collaborated with composer/arranger Gil Evans in 1950 to create the seminal West Coast Jazz Recordings. The Faculty Jazz Ensemble will recreate the album in its entirety, including Gerry Mulligan's "Joost at the Roost," which was written for the original group, but never recorded.

Tickets are $5 general admission, $4 for CCU faculty and staff and $3 for CCU students. To purchase tickets, visit CCU's cultural arts site (coastal.edu/culturalarts), call the Wheelwright Box Office at 843-349-ARTS (2787) or visit the box office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
