Traveling exhibition comes to CCU library

October 17, 2014

"Dust, Drought and Dreams Gone Dry," a traveling exhibition and discussion series, will come to Coastal Carolina University's Kimbel Library from Friday, Oct. 24, to Friday, Dec. 12. The opening reception will be in the Bryan Information Commons foyer on Friday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The connection between humans and nature, the human response to adversity -- all themes that came to describe living in the Great Plains during the Dust Bowl in the 1930s -- will be explored. Jason Eastman, associate professor of sociology, will provide music and commentary on Woody Guthrie "Dust Bowl Ballads" during the reception.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the upcoming five-part discussion and film series which will explore the numerous and far-reaching effects of this prolonged natural disaster. Ken Burns' film "The Dust Bowl: The Great Plow Up" begins the series on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m.

"Dust, Drought and Dreams Gone Dry" was developed by the American Library Association Public Programs Office in collaboration with the libraries of Oklahoma State University and Mount Holyoke College. The exhibition and tour were made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor.

The Bryan Information Commons is located in the Kimbel Library at 376 University Blvd. in Conway. For more information about the event, contact Dean of Library Services Barbara Burd at 843-349-2401 or bburd@coastal.edu.
