‘Dear White People’ film set for viewing at CCU

February 4, 2015

"Dear White People," a satirical portrait of race relations in contemporary America, will be shown at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, in the Lib Jackson Student Union Theater at Coastal Carolina University. The movie and an educational discussion afterward are free and open to the public.

The 108-minute movie was written and directed by Justin Simien and focuses on African American college students. When a biracial student sparks a controversy on the campus radio program by declaring that white people will be required to have two black friends (not counting drug dealers) in order to appear non-racist, pandemonium ensues.

The University's Office of Multicultural Student Services is sponsoring the event, which features a discussion facilitated by Hephzibah Strmic-Pawl, assistant professor of sociology; Angie Fitzpatrick, assistant director of CCU's women's and gender studies program; and Jamie Piperato, assistant director of multicultural student services.

The movie theater is located in the new Student Union at 100 Spadoni Park Circle.
