Charleston quartet brings its music to CCU

February 23, 2015

The Jasmine Saxophone Quartet, a new musical ensemble from the Charleston area, will perform in the Edwards Recital Hall at Coastal Carolina University on Monday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $5, the discounted price for CCU staff and faculty is $4 and, for students, $3.

Jasmine Saxophone Quartet's music is a blend of composed and improvised elements drawing from the heritage of American jazz. The performance will showcase original arrangements of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," along with selections by Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. The ensemble's music uses solo and group improvisation, classic saxophone harmony and Gullah rhythms for a new take on classic American folk opera.

The group consists of four of the most in-demand performers in the South Carolina Lowcountry: Simon Harding (alto saxophone), Robert Lewis (soprano and alto saxophone), Dan O'Reilly (baritone saxophone) and Mark Sterbank (tenor saxophone).

Harding, a CCU alumnus (2006), is a full-time professional saxophonist, composer and recording artist. Lewis is director of jazz studies at the College of Charleston and the lead alto saxophonist for the acclaimed Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

O' Reilly directs CCU's POP 101 and Saxophone Ensembles, and performs with the CCU Faculty Jazz Combo. He is also instructor of the saxophone studio, the history of jazz and American popular music. Sterbank teaches at Charleston Southern University and performs regularly around Charleston with the Quentin Baxter Ensemble, the Charleston Singleton Quintet and the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

Edwards Recital Hall is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, room 152. The college is located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus.
