March 3, 2015

Coastal Carolina University's Symphonic Band, Coastal Winds and the Aynor Concert Band come together for a "Side-by-Side Concert: From Aynor to Conway" on Thursday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission is $5.

Directed by Jim Tully, the CCU bands will perform a tribute to John Kennedy called "Elegy for a Young American," Offenbach's overture from "Orpheus in the Underworld," as well as a combination of English folk songs. The Aynor Concert Band will perform three pieces, one of which will feature its trombone section entitled "Teddy Trombones."

Tully, a professor of music at CCU, has more than 25 years of experience teaching music at all levels and is also the founding director of the Coastal Carolina University bands.

The Aynor Band is under the direction of J. Mark Mendez, who has directed the bands at Aynor High School since 1997, following five years of teaching at public schools in West Virginia. Mendez earned a bachelor's degree in music at West Virginia University. He is active as a clinician and guest conductor for various all-county and regional honor bands. Mendez performs around Horry County as a trumpet performer, and he has also played guitar for bands in Nashville.

Wheelwright Auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle. Student tickets are $3 and faculty and staff are $4. For more information, visit or call Wheelwright Box Office at 843-349-ARTS (2787) Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
