CCU seeks cooks for Edible Book Fair

March 16, 2015

Coastal Carolina University is looking for some cake bakers to participate in the annual Edible Book Fair in honor of National Library Week on Wednesday, April 15, from noon to 2 p.m. at Kimbel Library.

Actually, the cakes don't have to be baked, and the entries don't have to be cakes, according to Barbara Burd, dean of library services. The entries only need to be edible and need to signify a book or book title in some way. Previous entries, for example, include "angry-looking" grapes on a plate for "Grapes of Wrath" and several colored gummy fish in bowls filled with blue gelation for water for "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish."

Entries can look like a book in form and shape, be inspired by a book or author, be a pun of a book title, refer to a book character, reproduce a book cover or just have something to do with books in general. Submissions should be delivered to the Kimbel Library Circulation Desk between 9 and 11 a.m. on April 15. Judging will take place from noon to 2 p.m. All attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite edible book creation.

Cakes are usually the mainstay, but the only rules are that the entries are totally edible and represent a book. Prizes will be given in student, faculty/staff and community categories. Registration is not required.
