Jazz ensembles to perform at CCU

Coastal Carolina University's New Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Chris Connolly, and Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Matthew White, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission is $5.

CCU's New Jazz and Jazz Ensembles are the flagship performing groups for the commercial music and jazz concentration at Coastal Carolina. For their combined Spring Concert, the program will include music by Charlie Parker, Woody Herman, Weather Report, Freddie Hubbard, Stevie Wonder, Cannonball Adderly, Oliver Nelson, Jamey Simmons, Radiohead, Gil Evans, Fred Sturm and Charles Mingus.

Students performing in the New Jazz Ensemble are: David Chase, Tyler Montgomery and Riley Rabon, saxophone; Robert Johnson, piano; Chris Scheu, guitar; Tyler Hughes, bass; Tim Forline, drums; and Cailin Aucoin, percussion. Mike Capetto, a community member who audits some classes at the University, will join them on saxophone.

Students performing in the Jazz Ensemble include: Ryan Mason, lead saxophone; Riley Rabon, Stephen Sartin, Bobo Ferguson and Chris Mocarski, saxophone; Ally Lazar, lead trombone; Duece Patton, JT Abrams and Stephen Healy, trombone; Tim Lewis, lead trumpet; Zach Douglas, Nick Vlandis and Matt Wagner, trumpet; Johnny Richeson, drums; Micah Ray, drums and percussion; McKinley Devilbiss, bass; Tim Hardwick, guitar; and DeAndrae Preston and Connor Mills, piano.

Connolly earned a bachelor's degree in trombone performance from the Eastman School of Music and a master's degree in jazz composition and arranging from William Paterson University. He has performed with the Long Bay Symphony, the Penfield Symphony (Penfield, N.Y.) and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow. Additionaly, he has an independently released jazz CD entitled "Since Last We Met."

White, assistant professor of music at CCU, earned a bachelor's degree in jazz studies from the University of North Florida, and earned master's and doctoral degrees in studio music and jazz from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He was previously the featured soloist in the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, the South Florida Jazz Orchestra, the Gene Krupa Big Band and other ensembles. In 2013, White released his first album as a leader, "The Super Villain Jazz Band," on ARC. The album received positive international press, including a 4-star review and Best of 2014 Award from DownBeat Magazine.

Wheelwright Auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle on the Conway campus. Tickets cost $5 for adults; $4 for senior citizens, alumni and CCU faculty/staff; and $3 for CCU students.
