Mortimer named associate dean

John Mortimer has been named associate dean of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University.

The associate dean will assist the dean in matters pertaining to the college, its students, faculty and staff.

"John has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he brings to this position," said Barbara Ritter, dean of the Wall College of Business. "The Wall College is fortunate to have an individual of his capacity to serve as associate dean."

Prior to accepting the associate dean position, Mortimer was chairperson of the accounting department at CCU. Under his leadership, the accounting department successfully recruited and hired a number of new faculty members, strengthened its relationship with external constituents through the Accounting Advisory Board, and increased the quantity and quality of student internships. The accounting department has also received accolades from the Office of the Provost for changes made in assessment.

Mortimer is a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. Prior to coming to Coastal in 2002, he taught at Indiana University (South Bend) and Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He taught various accounting courses in controllership, cost accounting and financial/managerial accounting; he has also taught governmental accounting on the undergraduate and graduate level. Mortimer earned a Ph.D. in accounting from Florida Atlantic University.
