CCU art gallery to present ‘Reflections’

May 6, 2015

"Reflections," an exhibition of mixed media drawings based on photographs, sketchbooks, writings and found text by artist Claudia Wilburn will open in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University from May 18 through June 19. This event is free and open to the public.

Wilburn, an assistant professor at Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga., creates complex narratives based on images from cemeteries throughout the southeast. Her depictions feature elaborate funerary imagery reworked with drawings and text to explore the intersections between her southern upbringing, spirituality, memory and emotion. Working back and forth between digital and handmade objects allows her to infuse deep meaning into these object and places.

"I value the human touch of handwritten texts," says Wilburn. "I often use books and sermons that belonged to my grandfather, a Baptist preacher from South Carolina, for much of my source text."

The Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery is located on the CCU campus in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
