CCU Student Veteran group wins national honor

October 8, 2015

The Student Veteran Association at Coastal Carolina University has been named Chapter of the Month by Student Veterans of America thanks to the progress made by the chapter in spring 2015.

Last year, the Student Veteran Association made changes on campus that included free parking for student veterans and handicapped parking privileges for student veterans with a disability percentage of 30 percent or higher if they have mobility issues and cannot get a handicap tag from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

"The Coastal Carolina University (CCU) Student Veterans Organization (SVO) in Conway, S.C., has proven to be a strong voice on campus since its formation in February 2013," according to Student Veterans of America. "The chapter's advocacy on behalf of student veterans, particularly student veterans with disabilities, has earned support from faculty and staff on campus, as well as regional recognition."

"This award represents the hard work and long hours we have poured into our growing chapter," said James Byrne, president of SVA at CCU. "Now the rest of the country knows that Coastal Carolina University's Student Veterans program is a serious student organization that is competitive on the national stage. We will always continue to advocate for our veterans."

Student Veterans of America is a coalition of student veterans groups on college campuses. It serves to provide veterans with the resources and support to succeed in higher education and achieve their academic goals.
