CCU faculty to discuss recently discovered fossil

October 13, 2015

Faculty members from Coastal Carolina University's Department of Anthropology will lead a discussion and presentation about a newly discovered Homo naledi fossil and its implication on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room 246 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards Humanities and Fine Arts building. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Homo naledi, or "star," was found in South Africa earlier this year and has been trending in the news ever since. The fossil represents a previously unknown species in the human evolutionary tree. The anthropologists who worked on the project have made 3D scans of the fossils. With the assistance of Jeff Case and CCU's Department of Visual Arts, replicated 3D printed specimens will be unveiled and examined during the presentation. Faculty will also show videos from the deep cave excavation. The discussion will focus on what this fossil discovery means for human evolution.

The Edwards College is located at 133 Chanticleer Drive, Conway. For more information, contact Carolyn Dillian, associate professor of anthropology, at cdillian@coastal.edu or 843-349-2777.
