OLLI hosts fundraiser with Lee Brockington

December 3, 2015

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Coastal Carolina University will hold its second fundraiser of the year, "From the Mountains to the Sea/An Evening with Lee Brockington," on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. at Hanser House in Pawleys Island. Reservations are required for the event, and tickets are $50. All proceeds will benefit the OLLI program.

The event will begin with a meet-and-greet with local author, historian and senior interpreter at Hobcaw Barony, Lee Brockington. She brings to life the history of Hobcaw Barony and provides a glimpse into the lives of the people who have been connected to the landscape for generations.

Hobcaw Barony is a 16,000-acre research reserve on the Waccamaw Neck in Georgetown County. The property includes 37 historic buildings and structures that represent both the 18th and 19th centuries. Financier Bernard Baruch (1870-1965) purchased the property in 1905 to use as a winter hunting retreat. He later sold the land to his daughter Belle Baruch. By the time of her death in 1964, she had created a foundation that would manage the land as an outdoor laboratory for universities in South Carolina.

Brockington has always been drawn to oral histories, which led to her first term as curator at the Historic Columbia Foundation in 1984. That same year, she began her long career working at Hobcaw Barony. She is a member of a number of historic organizations and has edited a book about Pawleys Island's history, "Pawleys Island: Stories From the Porch."

A Southern cuisine dinner will also be served after the presentation. The menu includes fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, collard greens, coleslaw, hushpuppies, banana pudding, and sweet and unsweetened tea.

To make a reservation, visit your nearest OLLI location (Myrtle Beach, Litchfield or Pawleys Island) or call 843-349-2767 or 843-349-6584. Hanser House is located at 14360 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island. More information about the OLLI program is available at coastal.edu/olli.
