"Apocalypse Now," a 1979 film following the mission of a captain during the Vietnam War, will be shown at Coastal Carolina University on Thursday, April 14, at 5 p.m. in Room 256 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Building. The event is free and open to the public.

The film, being screened as part of the War and Society Film Series, is directed by Francis Ford Coppola and follows the story of Captain Willard as he is sent on a dangerous mission to Cambodia to assassinate a renegade colonel who has set himself up as a god among a local Cambodian tribe. The critically acclaimed film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture as well as a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Drama in 1980. The movie is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's novella "Heart of Darkness." "Apocalypse Now" stars Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall. The movie has a running time of two hours, 33 minutes.

Brandon Palmer, professor of history at CCU, will host a discussion about the film following the screening. This is the last showing in The War and Society Film Series, which is focused on encouraging discussion about what happens to societies during periods of war. Other films screened have included "The Water Diviner," "The Good German" and "Suite Française."
