CCU event honors civil rights activist Ella Baker

April 14, 2016

The third annual Ella Baker Day will be held on Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. Janaya Khan, the co-founder of Black Lives Matter Toronto, is the keynote speaker. The public is invited to the free event.

The event honors the civil rights activist Ella Baker, who worked with notable organizations such as Dr. Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Baker has been recognized as the mother of the Civil Rights Movement and was known for her belief in the potential and dignity of every individual.

Khan has become a leading voice in the global crusade for social transformation, justice and equality. Her dedication and bold approach to social justice work has created opportunities to academic and frontline community dialogue while engaging audiences on the global impacts of the Black Lives Matter movement.

In celebration of Baker's legacy, this event is co-sponsored by CCU's Social Justice Research Initiative, Multicultural Student Services and the Department of Sociology. The event aims to foster discussion regarding participatory democracy, social justice and contemporary actions to create a more just and ethical society.
