CCU professor plans tribute performance to folksinger Jean Ritchie
Jean Ritchie, known as "The Mother of Folk," was born in Viper, Ky., the youngest of 14 children. She showed her talent for memorizing lengthy traditional ballads at a young age. She was recorded by folklorist Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress and received a Fulbright scholarship to trace links between American, British and Scottish ballads. She received the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship in 2002, the highest honor in the folk and traditional arts in the United States. Ritchie died in her home on June 1, 2015, at the age of 92.
Trinka is an author, recording artist, frequent lecturer and performer. She performs as a solo folk artist and sings in the Carolina Master Chorale. She has written and recorded four volumes of folksongs for children: "My Little Rooster," "Bought Me a Cat," "John, the Rabbit" and "The Little Black Bull" and is the featured arranger and performer on a collaborative three-CD project - "Had a Little Rooster," "There's a Hole in the Bucket" and "Old Joe Clark." She earned a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois, a master's degree from Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary, and a doctorate in music education from the University of Texas at Austin.
Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni, teens, and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $5. Tickets for children and CCU/HGTC students are $3.
