Sophomore pitcher Bobby Holmes displays plaque for academic excellence

OMAHA, Neb. - During the opening ceremonies Friday night at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, the Coastal Carolina baseball program and sophomore pitcher Bobby Holmes were recognized for academic excellence.

NCAA president Mark Emmert used the opening ceremonies to remind the crowd of nearly 20,000 that those participating at the College World Series are, in fact, student-athletes and commended them for their excellence both on and off the field.

First, Emmert recognized the player from each of the eight participating teams with the highest GPA. Coastal Carolina's honoree was sophomore Bobby Holmes, who carries a 3.77 GPA in interdisciplinary studies. In four semesters at Coastal, Holmes has earned President's List once (4.0 GPA for the fall of 2014) and has earned Dean's List three times.

Headlining the group was Texas Tech Tyler Floyd, who was honored with the NCAA ELITE 90 award. The senior catcher has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout his tenure at Texas Tech. Floyd has already earned his degree from Texas Tech as he was honored as the highest-ranking graduate in the exercise sports science program during commencement ceremonies this past December. He is currently pursuing his master's degree at Texas Tech.

Second, Emmert recognized CCU head coach Gary Gilmore as his Chanticleers own the best team GPA among the eight teams participating in the College World Series. Coastal's baseball team owns a 3.17 cumulative GPA. Of the 27 players on the roster for the College World Series, 18 Chants earned at least a 3.0 GPA for the 2015-16 academic year. In addition, David Parrett was named to the President's List as he posted a 4.0 GPA for the Spring 2016 semester while Billy Cooke, Holmes, Tyler Chadwick, Anthony Marks and Mike Morrison earned Dean's List.

In eight semesters at Coastal Carolina, Chadwick, a three-time Academic All-Big South selection, earned President's List once and Dean's List six times.

Last, Emmert had all the student-athletes that have graduated stand and be recognized. Among the group were Chanticleers Alex Cunningham, Parrett, Connor Owings, Zach Remillard and Tyler Poole.

The ELITE 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.
