TurboVote allows CCU students to register to vote

August 16, 2016

Coastal Carolina University is hoping to promote civic engagement and get students registered to vote with the help of an innovative online platform called TurboVote.

The software platform and implementation program developed by the nonprofit organization Democracy Works aims to simplify the voting process. Through TurboVote, students are able to vote online or by absentee paper ballot forms, and are also sent election reminders via text or email.

The program was brought to CCU through assistant professor of politics and geography, Drew A. Kurlowski, who shared the need for the program with Vice President for Campus Life and Student Engagement Debbie Conner.

"Participation in politics is fundamental to a healthy democracy, and the participation of CCU students, and all young people, is important to make sure they have a strong voice among the chorus of other citizens," said Kurlowski. "TurboVote is a good tool to help students engage with their community, whether that be here in South Carolina or in their home state. It will help raise students' awareness of our political calendar, and help them participate all the way down the ballot."

The CCU TurboVote web page became active in May. The first email letter inviting students to participate was sent in July.

"To continue receiving federal financial aid, we are required to have a voter registration drive on campus," said Conner. "This is a simple way to do that, and it encourages student civic engagement. Being an active voter and participating in civic affairs are very important. Students need to understand the power they hold as voters in our democracy. They need to be educated on the issues and be prepared to vote."

A campus voter registration drive will take place from Sept. 12 to 16 in collaboration with Kimbel Library and the Student Government Association to help students register prior to election deadlines.

TurboVote currently has around 160 higher education partners. In the 2012 presidential election, 75 percent of users who successfully registered for the first time through TurboVote voted, and 80 percent who updated their registration status cast their ballots. This is in contrast to the 50 percent youth turnout in 2012.
