‘Master and Commander’ film kicks off series

"Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," an Oscar-winning 2003 film starring Russell Crowe as a brash British captain, will be shown at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater in the Lib Jackson Student Union, Room A-110. The event is free and open to the public.

The film, set during the Napoleonic Wars, is about a British captain who pushes his crew to the brink as they search for a powerful French war vessel off the South American coast. The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Patrick O'Brian.

After the screening, Daniel Ennis, dean of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, will provide historical context for the film and lead a discussion on imperialism and early 18th century naval warfare and exploration.

The film is being screened as part of the CCU Department of History's War and Society Film Series, explores what happens to societies in times of war. Other films in the series include "Miracle at St. Anna" on Sept. 27, "The English Patient" on Oct. 11, and "Indochine" on Nov. 8. The Lib Jackson Student Union is located at 100 Spadoni Park Circle.
