CCU to show film ‘Agamemnon’

September 8, 2016

Coastal Carolina University will feature the film "Agamemnon," a classic tale of Greek mythology, on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. in The Coastal Theater in the Lib Jackson Student Union. The film is free and open to the public.

"Agamemnon" is a tale recounted in Homer's "Odyssey" that depicts the story of a man who is assassinated by his wife Clytemnestra, and her lover Aegisthus.

In the film, Agamemnon is returning from his victory at Troy, which had been besieged by Greek armies for 10 years. The Greek armies were attempting to recover Helen, Agamemnon's sister-in-law, who was kidnapped by the Trojan prince Paris.

Following the movie presentation, Steven Earnest, Ph.D., professor of theatre, will lead a discussion about the film's cinematic style and historical accuracy.

"'Agamemnon' was written by Aeschylus at the height of Ancient Greek Theatre, the Fifth Century B.C.," said Earnest. "'Agamemnon' features the great military leader's return and his demise at the hands of his angry wife and her lover."

The Student Union is located at 106 Spadoni Park Circle on the CCU campus in Conway.
