Janice Blakey and Neal Gielstra are the recipients of Coastal Carolina University's 2001-2002 Staff Excellence Awards. The awards are presented annually to recognize exceptional non-faculty university employees.

Blakey, an administrative specialist in the Department of Psychology and Sociology, received the Staff Excellence Award for Support Staff. She began working at Coastal in 1989 in the Center for Economic Development and has worked in the Department of Psychology and Sociology since 1994. Blakey lives in Myrtle Beach.

Gielstra, research specialist with Coastal's Center for Marine and Wetland Studies, received the Staff Excellence Award for Professional Staff. Since 1992 he has played a leading role in designing and building instruments and equipment used in the center's many marine research programs. Gielstra lives in Myrtle Beach. A native of Holland, Gielstra earned a bachelor's degree in marine science from Coastal in 1991.
