Lecture to focus on Hispanic migration in local areas

October 25, 2016

"The Hispanic Migration" will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. at the Myrtle Beach Education Center. The event, part of Coastal Carolina University's American Studies Lecture Series on American Identities, is free and open to the public, and a preceding coffee social begins at 9:30 a.m.

Yun Sil Jeon and Marie Estelle Picouto, CCU faculty members in the department of languages and intercultural studies, will facilitate a three-part presentation that explores and examines the stories of the Hispanic population now residing in this region.

In the first portion of the program, Jeon and Picouto will present their research on Asian and Hispanic migration in the United States, linguistic attitudes of the Hispanic population in the Conway and Myrtle Beach areas and challenges that local Hispanic residents encounter.

Next, participants will take part in a group exercise to experience the daily community dynamics this population experiences.

Finally, Jeon and Picouto will lead a group discussion to analyze the exercise and relate it to their research findings.

Jeon, an associate professor, earned her Ph.D. in Spanish linguistics in Madrid, Spain; her dissertation was a sociolinguistics study about the Korean community in Argentina. Her professional fields of interest include Spanish grammar and the teaching of Spanish as a second language. Picouto, a teaching associate, earned her master's degree in cultural action and management from the University of Puerto Rico and has worked as a team leader and training coordinator with community-based and social services prevention programs in Horry County.

The American Studies Lecture Series is designed to provide a multidisciplinary perspective and reflective discussion on issues involving American culture, identity, history, politics and society. CCU faculty members from departments ranging from history, art and communication to anthropology, theater and cultural studies will participate in the program.
