UT professor to lecture on effective thinking for HTC series

Michael Starbird, University of Texas Distinguished Professor of Mathematics, will discuss "Elements of Effective Thinking" on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium (Room 116) of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University. This event, part of CCU's HTC Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

Starbird has given hundreds of lectures and created dozens of workshops on effective thinking and teaching based on the premise that anyone can learn to think better by applying specific strategies. Starbird co-authored the textbook "The Heart of Mathematics: An Invitation to Effective Thinking" with Edward Burger. He has produced DVD courses for The Teaching Company in the Great Courses Series on calculus, statistics, probability, geometry and the joy of thinking. His most recent book is "The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking" which is also co-authored with Burger.

Starbird earned a bachelor's degree from Pomona College and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He has received more than 15 teaching awards, including the Mathematical Association of America's 2007 national teaching award, the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award and the UT Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award.

The HTC Lecture Series, sponsored by Horry Telephone Cooperative Inc., brings external speakers to the CCU campus to lecture on matters of general interest to the community.
