CCU fall film series concludes with ‘Indochine’

November 14, 2016

"Indochine," a 1992 film following a mother and her adopted daughter as they maneuver a crosscultural love triangle in colonial-era Vietnam, will be shown at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 5 p.m. in The Coastal Theater in the Lib Jackson Student Union, Room A-110. The event is free and open to the public.

The film, being screened as the fall finale of the War & Society Film Series, is set in 1930 at a time when French colonial rule in Indochina is ending. "Indochine" tells the story of an unmarried French woman, played by César Award-winning actress Catherine Deneuve, who raises a Vietnamese princess as if she were her own daughter. She and her daughter both fall in love with a French naval officer, which changes the course of their lives significantly. The movie has a running time of 2 hours, 40 minutes.

Philip Whalen, professor of history at CCU, will provide the historical context for the film and will lead a discussion on postcolonial identity, nationalism and decolonization at the conclusion of the event. This is the last showing in the War and Society Film Series, which encourages discussion about what happens to societies during times of war.

Other films in the series this fall included "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Miracle at St. Anna" and "The English Patient." The Lib Jackson Student Union is located at 100 Spadoni Park Circle.
