Coastal Carolina's Bothma Named Southeast Regional Athlete of the Year

November 16, 2016
Annie Bothma

Annie Bothma, a freshman exercise and sport science major from Stellenbosch, South Africa, has been named the Southeast Women's Athlete of the Year. Coastal Carolina women's cross country now boasts the back-to-back regional athletes of the year as Letitia Saayman won the award last year.

Bothma has won the two events in which she has competed. She won the first individual title for the Chants in the Sun Belt Conference Championships with a time of 17:27.5, and followed that a week later by taking the Southeast Regional title in 20:15.4.

By finishing in the top 25 at NCAA Regionals, Bothma earned all-region honors and is eligible to advance to the NCAA Championship meet. The top four finishers at each of the nine regionals from non-qualifying teams automatically advance, along with two at-large individuals. A total of 31 teams make the NCAA meet - the top two from each regional and 13 at-large selections.

The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be contested Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet will be broadcast live online via NCAA.com.
