Bass and guitar duo Dez Cordas to perform at CCU

Musical duo Dez Cordas, featuring double bassist Craig Butterfield and guitarist Matthew Slotkin, will perform Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Musical duo Dez Cordas, featuring double bassist Craig Butterfield and guitarist Matthew Slotkin, will perform Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall at Coastal Carolina University. Tickets are $7, with discounts available.

The concert will offer an eclectic mix of musical styles from tango to jazz to baroque. The classically trained duo will demonstrate their diverse musical roots with arrangements by composers including Astor Piazzolla, Chick Corea and Bela Bartok, as well as new compositions written for them by leading contemporary composers.

Butterfield toured with jazz trumpet player Maynard Ferguson as a member of Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau Band, performing in New York, London and Mexico City and at the Bangkok Cultural Arts Center as a special guest of the king of Thailand. Butterfield has been active in the studio as well, appearing on several jazz CDs as both a performer and a producer with artists such as Steve Weist, Chip McNeill and David Braid. Most recently, he performed as an artist and clinician in South Korea and Japan.

Slotkin has performed in leading venues on six continents. Recent performances include tours of South Africa, Poland, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay, New Zealand and Australia, as well as concerts at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival (Charleston, S.C.), the Walled City Music Festival (Ireland) and the World Saxophone congresses in Scotland, Thailand and Slovenia. He has performed on numerous classical guitar society concert series, including New Zealand (GANZ), Montreal, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Iowa, northeastern Pennsylvania and the Great Lakes.

As Dez Cordas, Butterfield and Slotkin have prolific performance and recording accomplishments. Dez Cordas' discography includes "Dances, Songs, Inventions" (2010, Centaur Records), "Gone Away" (2011, Summit Records) and "Pilgrimage: New Works for Guitar and Double Bass" (2015, Summit Records). The CCU performance is a stop on the duo's tour of the southeastern United States.

Discounted tickets are available. CCU/HGTC faculty and staff tickets are $5 and CCU/HGTC students are $3 with a student ID, and children (ages 1-10) are $3.

Teenagers (11-17 years), senior citizens (65+), OLLI members,CCU and HGTC alumni, OLLI members, groups and senior citizens are $5.

The Edwards Recital Hall is located in Room 152 in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus.
