CCU voice students to perform works of Sondheim

January 24, 2017
Stephen Sondheim

Coastal Carolina University voice students will present "Putting It Together: The Songs of Stephen Sondheim," a musical revue showcasing the American lyricist and composer's work on Monday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall at Coastal Carolina University. Tickets are $7 with discounts available.

Performers are students of Jeffrey Jones, CCU associate professor of music, and include Kathryn Albers, Tessa Belongia, Brooke Bloomquist, Alexandra Brady, Ashton Fowler, Kaleb Jenkins, TJ Little, Maggie Renfroe, Bryce Ridley-Williams, Cameron Taylor, Cody Taylor, Emma VanDeVelde and Wes Williams.

Sondheim is known for the lyrics and music he has written for musical theater productions for more than 50 years, including "Sweeney Todd," "Into the Woods," "Company," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and lyrics for "West Side Story." He has earned an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize and the 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work, which weaves sophisticated lyrics with complex musical structures.

"I like to expose my students to the great songwriters," said Jones, "and in the musical theater, no one is better than Sondheim. He is the genius that others are now compared to in that genre."

The concert is an annual event for Jones' voice students, with each performance focusing on a selected iconic composer; past figures include Cole Porter and George Gershwin.

"The concert is given in cabaret style; one number begins just as one is ending," said Jones. "The pace is quick to keep the audience entertained."

Jones has performed with the Arizona Opera, Atlanta Opera, Chattanooga Symphony, Durango Choral Society, the Music in the Mountains Festival and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. As a member of the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, he participated in three recordings for Telarc Records and performed in two concerts at Carnegie Hall with conductor Robert Shaw. He joined CCU's faculty in 2007.

CCU/HGTC faculty and staff, senior citizens (65+), OLLI members, CCU alumni and teens (11-17 years) are $5. Children and CCU/HGTC students are $3 with a student ID.

The Edwards Recital Hall is located in Room 152 in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus.
