CCU to hold South Carolina History Day competition

February 27, 2017

Coastal Carolina University will hold the regional South Carolina History Day competition on Thursday, March 9, at 9 a.m. in locations across the Conway campus. The event is free and open to the public.

South Carolina History Day is the state affiliate for National History Day. The competition brings together 460 middle and high school students from 13 schools across the county to exhibit and display their projects on some facet of South Carolina history. All presenters have qualified for the event through a school-level competition, and all projects reflect this year's National History Day theme of "Taking a Stand in History."

Student projects reflect yearlong primary source research on a topic of the student's choice and consist of a documentary, performance, research paper, exhibit or website.

CCU became the state headquarters for South Carolina History Day in 2016, and judges for the competition include CCU faculty members, local Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chapter members, and local high school teachers.

"History Day is such a unique opportunity for students to become engaged in a subject that they sometimes find boring. It also helps students develop skills that will make them successful throughout their academic careers," said Angela Dembiczak, South Carolina History Day coordinator. "Coastal has so many members that support History Day; it is another way we are able to support the community and help students achieve academic excellence."

Projects will be exhibited in Kimbel Arena, the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts building, and Brittain Hall. The awards ceremony begins at 1 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.

The top three projects from each category in each division move to the state competition, which will take place on Saturday, April 29, at Westwood High School in Blythewood, S.C. Winners from that competition move to the national competition in June at the University of Maryland at College Park.
