Russian movie ‘Prisoner of the Mountains’ to be shown

"Prisoner of the Mountains," a 1996 Russian film directed by Sergei Bodrov, will be shown at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday, March 14, at 5 p.m. in The Coastal Theater of the Lib Jackson Student Union, Room A-110. The event is free and open to the public.

The film is a war drama based on the Caucasian War-era short story "The Prisoner in the Caucasus" by Leo Tolstoy. The plot follows a group of Russian soldiers who are ambushed by rebels in the Chechen Mountains. Two survivors, who are taken prisoner by Tartan chief Abdul Murat, who plans to trade them to the Russians in exchange for his son who is being held prisoner. The two men experience different fates as a result of their different approaches to their unfortunate situation.

The film is being shown as part of CCU's Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies' International Film Series: Crossing Borders. Following the screening, CCU teaching associate Natalia Alekseyenko will lead a discussion on the historical relevance of the film. Alekseyenko was born in Russia and earned a bachelor's degree in French, Russian and English translation and interpretation in Moscow. After relocating to the United States, she earned a master's degree in French to English translation from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and her doctorate in translation from Kent State University. She teaches both French and English at CCU.

The film will be shown in Russian with English subtitles. The Lib Jackson Student Union is located at 100 Spadoni Park Circle on the main Conway campus.
