Percussionist Provost joins CalypSamba on CCU stage

The Coastal Carolina University World Percussion Ensemble, CalypSamba, will share the stage with renowned steel pan artist Victor Provost in a spring concert on Thursday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission tickets are $7, with discounts available.

Provost is regarded as one of the world's leading players on the unique steel pan (or steel drum). Deemed by Jazz Times Magazine as "a vigorous and dazzling soloist," Provost has made appearances at concert halls, clubs and stages around the world. He has a strong foundation in bebop, a contemporary sensibility and deep roots in Caribbean music, allowing him to work in a wide range of genres and musical styles. Provost has been the Washington, D.C., City Paper's "Jazz Percussionist of the Year" six years running, and he has a new recording called "Bright Eyes" that debuted at No. 5 on the iTunes Top 40 jazz charts. He woks as an adjunct professor of music at George Mason University and is an arts ambassador in this native U.S. Virgin Islands.

CalypSamba is a high-energy group that has been featured at several music festivals, conferences and schools around the southeastern United States. The ensemble was the winner of the 2015 Percussive Arts Society World Percussion Ensemble Showcase Competition. CalypSamba showcases music styles from around the world. The ensemble is composed of a diverse group of undergraduate students with many different majors, and is directed by Jesse Willis, assistant professor of music and director of percussion studies.

Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni, teens and CCU/HGTC faculty and sstaff may purchase tickets for $5. Tickets for children and CCU/HGTC students are $3.
