American Studies lecture delves into rock ’n’ roll

April 4, 2017

"Ain't that America: Rock 'n' Roll Icons" will be the topic at Coastal Carolina University's American Studies Lecture on Saturday, April 8, at the Myrtle Beach Education Center. The coffee social will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the lecture at 10 a.m. This event is free and open to the public, and a ticket is not required.

Daniel Ennis, dean and vice president for academic outreach of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, will discuss how iconic performances and images from American rock 'n' roll have redefined patriotism and contributed to American culture. His talk will encompass Chuck Berry's recording of "Back in the USA," the cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" and many other iconic aspects of rock music. The discussion will also explore how American rock and rollers of the 20th century utilized American iconography.

Ennis earned a bachelor's degree from the College of Charleston, a master's degree from Appalachian State University and a doctorate from Auburn University. He is a former co-director of CCU's Honors Program and previously served as interim associate dean of the Edwards College and as chair of the Department of English.

As a scholar, his focus is British literature, and he has published books and articles on English authors. He has also published articles on academic administration and assessment. Since coming to Coastal in 1999, he has taught composition, literature surveys, graduate classes in literature and culture, and the First Year Experience.

As dean he has placed special emphasis on experiential learning, and promoted programs that bring the humanities and arts into the world though research, practice and project-based instruction.

An online course in American Studies (AMST 303/503) is available as a complement to the four-part lecture series.

The Myrtle Beach Education Center is located on 79th Avenue and the event will be held in Room 108.
