"Zero Dark Thirty," an Oscar-winning film from 2012, will be shown at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday, April 11, at 5 p.m. at The Coastal Theater of the Lib Jackson Student Union. The event is free and open to the public.

"Zero Dark Thirty" is an action film based on actual events that follows the hunt for Osama bin Laden following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The film follows protagonist Maya, a new CIA intelligence agent who is assigned to locate al-Qaeda and bin Laden. The film chronicles the decade-long hunt for bin Laden, beginning two years after the terrorist attacks and ending with the capture and death of bin Laden in May 2011. The film was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and stars Jessica Chastain as Maya.

Following the screening, CCU assistant professor of politics Joseph Fitsanakis will hold a discussion to provide historical and political context to the film. He teaches courses on national security; intelligence communications, analysis, and operations; and espionage at CCU. Fitsanakis will also speak on terrorism, intelligence and torture and the roles they play in the political climate of the world.

The film is being shown as part of CCU's War and Society Film Series, sponsored by CCU's Department of History.

The Coastal Theater is Room A-110 of the Lib Jackson Student Union, located at 100 Spadoni Park Circle on the main Conway campus. For more information on this event, contact department chair Gary Schmidt at 843-349-2741 or gschmidt@coastal.edu.
