Climate research presentations open to public at CCU

July 24, 2017

Coastal Carolina University's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (C-SURF) will present their research projects concerning coastal zones and climate at the organization's annual colloquium on Friday, July 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Science Annex II building on campus. The public is invited to attend.

The C-SURF program hosts up to eight undergraduates selected from a nationwide pool to come and work with CCU professors on research projects for 10 weeks. As non-CCU students with at least a sophomore standing, these research fellows receive a $5,000 stipend, $1,200 meal allowance, CCU housing, usage of CCU resources as transient students and travel support to CCU. During the program, the students are also trained on computing, data analyses and participate in professional development workshops.

C-SURF involves students in projects related to geoscience problems with emphases on heavy computational analyses (e.g., climate change, coastal processes) and big data analytics (e.g., data mining, predictive models).

The following presentations are scheduled:

- Kali Coxe, North Carolina Central University, "Computational Analysis of Uncharacterized Proteins of Environmental Bacterial Genome"

- Kristen Falcinelli, University of New England, "Using Machine Learning Techniques in the Analysis of Oceanographic Data"

- Danny Greenway, Ball State University, "Use of Ensemble Numerical Weather Prediction Data for Inversely Determining Atmospheric Refractivity in Surface Ducting Condition"

- Jeremy Jolly, South Carolina State University, "Hydrological Effects of Historic Rainfall on Waccamaw River"

- Sidney Singleton, Appalachian State University, "Twitter Analytics: Are the U.S. Coastal Regions Prepared for Climate Change in 2017?"

- Khenan Terry, Roanoke College, "Velocity Deficits in the Wake of Lemon Shark Dorsal Fins with Particle Image Velocimetry"

- Marion Washington, Benedict College, "Analysis of the Impact of Realistic Wind Size Parameter on the DELFT3D Model"

In collaboration between CCU's Department of Computing Sciences and the Department of Coastal and Marine Systems Science, science professors Sathish Kumar and Varavut Limpasuvan received a $325,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund undergraduate summer research as part of NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. This funding allows CCU to serve as an REU site for three years, with possible continuation thereafter. This is CCU's first ever REU site award in its history.
