Sexual Violence Awareness Week, a nationally observed event at many universities in the United States and overseas, will be held at Coastal Carolina University from Monday, Oct. 2, through Thursday, Oct. 5. The events will take place on campus, but are free and open to the public.

The campus partners of the Campus Assault Resource Education Support (CARES) Coalition are sponsoring the week of events and have planned events that will encourage discussions and raise awareness about sexual violence.

"The partners of the CCU CARES Coalition host a variety of events during Sexual Violence Awareness Week for several reasons, including to help build awareness through education and community outreach efforts," said Chris Donavan-Haines, assistant director of counseling services. "Our hope is that individuals will develop a better understanding of survivors' experiences, as well as knowing that the campus community cares and that there are many resources available if an act of sexual violence occurs." Events planned for the week include:

Monday, Oct. 2

- Poster making station on Prince Lawn from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 3

- The Take Back the Night Rally March and Speak Out, an 11-year tradition, will take place at the Lib Jackson Student Union Courtyard beginning at 6 p.m. Students, staff, faculty and members of the community are invited to march across campus chanting slogans against sexual violence, while encouraging others to take a stand on their own and "Step Up!" as part of a bystander intervention program.

Wednesday, Oct. 4

- The Clothesline Project will be held on Prince Lawn from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants have the opportunity to create custom T-shirts that display messages of hope and support to survivors of sexual violence. All shirts will be hung on a large clothesline display.

- "The Invisible War" documentary is being screened in The Coastal Theater from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5

"What If I Tell? A Panel Discussion" in HTC Room 207 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
