CCU’s Kimbel Library to host Book Talk with alumni authors
The three featured South Carolina authors, all recent CCU graduates, are Tabitha D. James, Reggie Nelson and Kenneth Page.
"One of my hopes with this is that CCU students and people in our local community see that three very young CCU alumni are already published authors, and they are subsequently motivated to publish or do other spectacular things because they see it's achievable," said Jason Alston, a reference librarian who is planning and organizing Kimbel Conversations.
Kimbel Conversations is a series of book talks featuring alumni authors and other writers and people of interest to the CCU community.
James, a Lake View native and 2013 graduate, published the title "Not. Posted S.E.A.S.O.N.S. of the Untold: a Motivational Memoir" through 1 Am She LLC in 2017. James shares some of her life experiences in her work, with the letters in "S.E.A.S.O.N.S." each representing an attribute needed to be empowered to overcome challenges in life. Dillon native Nelson '14 self-published "My First Money Book: A Guide for Parents and Children to Saving, Spending, Sharing, and Investing Your Money" in 2016. Nelson's background is in finance, and the book is described as, "a parent's and child's guide to saving, spending, sharing and investing money." The book is illustrated and aimed at young children, as Nelson believes that children are never too young to begin thinking of financial responsibility.
Columbia native Page '12, a former CCU football player, self-published "Success Under Construction: A Guide for Maturing People" in 2015. Page's book is a "31-day devotional" for "maturing people" who are bound for success but need encouragement and guidance to get there.
Following the book talk, the three authors will each donate a book to Kimbel Library as part of their way of giving back and contributing to the alma mater that they feel helped prepare them for the rest of their lives.
"The four years I spent at Coastal were a firm foundation for greatness," said James. "The Office of Multicultural Students Services and E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration changed my life for the better. Without these opportunities, I would not be nearly as successful as I have been thus far. At the event, I plan to discuss some highlights from my time at Coastal and how it shaped my life, my current professional and philanthropic platform and some aspects of the book."
The event is co-sponsored by Kimbel Library and Multicultural Student Services.
The Johnson Auditorium is located in Room 116 of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, located at 119 Chanticleer Drive E. on the Conway campus.
