CCU film series presents ‘Grand Budapest Hotel’

October 3, 2017

Wes Anderson's 2014 film "The Grand Budapest Hotel" will be screened Thursday, Oct. 12, at 12:30 p.m. in Room 114 of the Myrtle Beach Education Center as part of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts War & Society Film Series. The event is free and open to the public.

The film follows the story of Gustav H., a legendary concierge at the famous Grand Budapest Hotel, and his most-trusted companion Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy with whom he teams up to clear his name of murder. Set in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka, this film shows the dramatically changing political landscape of Europe between World War I and World War II. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture and won awards for best original score, costuming, makeup and production design.

Philip Whalen, professor in CCU's Department of History, will lead a discussion following the screening on the historical and political context of the film.

"'The Grand Budapest Hotel' allows audiences to recognize the fact that modern cosmopolitanism-hence the hotel-was not antithetical to the rise of authoritarian regimes in Europe between the two world wars," said Whalen.

The War & Society Film Series aims to inspire discussion and offer information on societal impacts during and after wars.

The Myrtle Beach Education Center is located at 900 79th Ave. N. at the corner of U.S. 17 Bypass and 79th Avenue North.
