CCU saxophone and low brass ensembles team up for fall concert

Coastal Carolina University's Saxophone Ensemble and Low Brass Ensemble will present an annual fall concert Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m., in the Edwards Recital Hall. Tickets are $7, with discounts available.

With Daniel O' Reilly, lecturer of music, directing the Saxophone Ensemble and Chris Connolly, lecturer of music, directing the Low Brass Ensemble, the concert will include a wide variety of music ranging from jazz to classical to rhythm. Musical selections will come from composers such as Scott Joplin (ragtime), Franz Biebl (classical), Kai Winding (jazz), and American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein.

The two ensembles will rotate, exchanging the stage to perform a diverse selection of music.

The Saxophone Ensemble includes Grant Adams, guest artist from Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Chris Colon, junior history major from Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Crystol King, junior music major from Aynor, S.C.; and Austin Krigbaum, non-degree-seeking student from Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Student musicians in the Low Brass Ensemble include, on trombone, Nicolas Lewis, junior music major from Loris; Clinton Patton, senior music major from Sumter; and Austin Floyd, freshman engineering major from Galivants Ferry. The tuba section includes Brandon Vaughn, senior music major from Sumter; Greg Jefferson, freshman music major from Spartanburg; and Jaquintas Washington, sophomore music major from Charleston. Brayden Williams, sophomore music major from Spartanburg, will perform on bass trombone. The rhythm section includes Marcus Cannon, sophomore music major from Conway on guitar; Tyler Coar, junior music major from Crofton, Md., on bass; and Micah Ray, senior music major from Little River on drums.

O'Reilly holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in composition from Long Island University in Greenville, N.Y. He has extensive performing experience both in New York City and in the area at venues such as the House of Blues, Broadway at the Beach and Brookgreen Gardens. O'Reilly also directs CCU's POP 101, the contemporary music ensemble. In addition, he is instructor of the saxophone studio and teaches courses including American popular music and the history of jazz.

Connolly obtained his master's degree in jazz composition and arranging from William Paterson University and has performed with the Long Bay Symphony, the Penfield Symphony and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

The Edwards Recital Hall is located in Room 152 in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway Campus. Parking is available in lots directly adjacent near the back of the building or in the lot near the Singleton building.

CCU and HGTC faculty and staff are $5 per ticket, as are senior citizens, OLLI members, CCU/ HGTC alumni and teenagers. Children and CCU/HGTC students may purchase tickets for $3.
