Mental health documentary to be screened at CCU

October 10, 2017

"It's Real: College Students and Mental Health," a suicide prevention documentary featuring two former Coastal Carolina University students, will be screened at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Coastal Theater (Room 110) in the Lib Jackson Student Union. The viewing is free and open to the public.

In order to spark more dialogue and encourage college students to reach out for help, the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) produced the documentary

featuring Coastal Carolina alumna Kelsie Miller and her twin sister, a former CCU student, Bailynne Miller.

Following the film, the Miller sisters will lead a question-and-answer session. The Students Helping Others Reach Excellence (SHORE) Peer Educators, a student organization, is sponsoring the documentary.

The film, about depression and suicide in college age individuals, was filmed over a two-year span of time. Filming locations included the CCU campus and the University of South Carolina. AFSP and the award-winning Break Thru Films company released the film four months ago and have made it available for purchase online and through the AFSP website.

Though the target audience is college students, faculty/staff, family members and all community members are encouraged to attend.

"Our hope is that showing this documentary will help raise awareness and understanding about the prevalence of college students who experience depression and thoughts of suicide," said Chris Donevant-Haines, adviser of the SHORE Peer Educators.

In connection with the film, the SHORE Peer Educators will participate in Myrtle Beach's Out of the Darkness Community Walk to Prevent Suicide on Saturday, Oct. 14.
