Steve Bailey, bassist and Coastal Carolina University artist-in-residence, will lead his annual "Pushing the Limits" concert with guest artists Chuck Cannon and Lari White as well as CCU faculty members Matt White and Tim Fischer, on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. Tickets are $25, with discounts available.

Bailey, a Myrtle Beach native, is known for his pioneering work with the six-string fretless bass. He serves as chair of the bass department at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Also from Myrtle Beach, Cannon has written hits for John Michael Montgomery, Toby Keith and George Strait. His wife, Lari White, is a singer-songwriter, producer and actress who charted numerous top-10 country songs, produced an album for Toby Keith and appeared with Tom Hanks in the film "Cast Away."

The concert will feature crossover country hits with jazz and rock underpinnings. "Lari's and Chuck's primary focus has been contemporary country music, but they are heavily blues, rock and R&B influenced, and Lari has some jazz in her blood as well. The concert will be a nice of mix of all that," said Bailey. "Our playing and writing backgrounds range from George Strait to Dizzy Gillespie, Toby Keith to Jethro Tull."

Fischer, associate professor of music, is a jazz guitarist, composer and educator who has performed across the United States and Europe. His debut album as a leader, "Due South" (2014), features his original compositions and arrangements.

Trumpeter, composer and educator Matt White is associate professor of music, coordinator of ensembles and commercial music and jazz, and manager of the Wheelwright Recording Studio at CCU. White recorded "The Super Villain Jazz Band" in 2017, a CD featuring original music including the commissioned "St. Helena Suite" inspired by the Gullah music of South Carolina's sea islands.

Bailey inaugurated the "Pushing the Limits" concert in 2006 to bring an eclectic variety of musical genres to the CCU stage.

"The concept was to take music to a different level, pushing what was possible, yet keeping it accessible to the general public," said Bailey. "I love bringing unusual and unexpected music back to my hometown. Every year is a different sound, feel, and mix. I am grateful that we get great support from both Coastal and the community."

General admission is $25. Senior citizens, OLLI members, CCU teens and alumni may purchase tickets for $20, CCU/HGTC faculty and staff tickets are $16.
