Alejandro Amenábar's 1996 award-winning thriller "Thesis/Tesis" will be screened Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. in the Coastal Theater as part of Coastal Carolina University's Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies Foreign Language Blockbuster Series. The event is free and open to the public.

The film tells the story of Ángela, a young Spanish woman attending college in Madrid who becomes intrigued by the use of violence in films. When she asks her instructor, Professor Figueroa, to see the library's most violent films, Ángela stumbles across a snuff film of a young woman and becomes obsessed with solving her murder. "Thesis/Tesis" will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.

Following the screening, Alejandro Muñoz-Garcés, assistant professor of languages and intercultural studies, will lead a discussion on the film's cultural, historical and political context. This film is rated R and contains content that may be inappropriate for children. Parental discretion is advised.

"The Foreign Language Blockbuster series seeks to draw attention to the fact that Hollywood cinema is only one of many film industries worldwide," said Gary Schmidt, series coordinator and professor/chair of the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies. "'Foreign films' include not just independent films and art films; there are also many important box office smashes in languages other than English. These films give us a window into the concerns of viewers from other cultures and challenge us to rethink the assumptions of our world view.'"
